kayaking at howard marsh on sat aug 29 2020

deb and i went kayaking for two hours at howard marsh

on wednesday deb reserved two kayaks from a local kayaking rental place

the boat ramp at howard marsh also has a nice kayak launch with rails and rollers making it easy to enter and exit the water

we entered the water at 9:10am and we exited shortly after 11am

regarding the weather the temps were pleasantly cool

the sky clouded over blocking the morning sunshine that occurred earlier

but it was windy

the winds blew from the northwest at 15 to 20 mph with gusts to 25 to 30 mph

i have only been kayaking a few times and that was by far the windiest weather that I have kayaked in

it was a good experience

the water was rolly and a little choppy but it was fine for kayaking

at times the marsh provided areas where the nearby vegetation knocked down the wind

but we also kayaked against the wind in wide open areas

when kayaking against the wind I think that at times we went nowhere

I timed how long it took to kayak a distance against the wind versus with the wind

against the wind it took 2.5 times longer to travel the same distnce

at one point i was surprised at how little ground or water that we had covered when plowing against the wind

we both enjoyed the experience

the rental service plans to offer kayaks for usage until october 31

we would like to kayak howard marsh a few more times this fall

we should have started this back in june or july

the rental cost was $15 per hour per kayak

eventually it will be cheaper to buy simple inexpensive kayaks maybe like the ones that we rented

if we can kayak a few more times over the next two months and maybe early next summer and if we still enjoy it then we can buy our own kayaks and a car mount to haul them

the kayaks that we rented were labeled perception access 11.5

The perfect sit-on-top kayak for a variety of adventures

From *$499 USD / $639 CAD

for $500 each we could buy two bicycles from detroit bikes that I could ride for exercise outside early in the morning in our neighborhood during the warmer time of the year when more daylight exists and I can use the same bicycle inside on a wintrainer as a stationary bike
